Crochet lesson, Persimmons and Tops in Blue

Yesterday, I conducted my first crochet class for two ladies who were referred to me by Valdosta Technical college. Since we didn't have enough students (again) to form an official class for the Adult Education program, I offered to teach them in the social hall of my apartment complex. It was only for an hour and one of the ladies was left-handed. I don't know how to teach left-handed since I'm right handed. I did have a book with illustrations and left her with several websites, i.e. You Tube, where she can pull up tutorial videos and hopefully practice making her foundation chain and single crochet. I hope she didn't get discouraged. I'm scheduled to teach them two more Tuesday nights, so we'll see. Today, my friend (the same one that brought me the chestnuts from her trees a while back) gave me some persimmons from her garden, three of which were very soft and ripe. I must tell you, I have never had such sweet, delicious fruit before. The last one I had must have not been completely ripe, because the taste and feel in my mouth made me almost not want to try another ever again, but I'm sure glad I did today. When the rest get ripe, I can use them to spread on my toast for a sweet treat with my tea. This evening, I took two of my friends to the Mathis Auditorium in Valdosta to see "Tops in Blue." I read the article in the Valdosta Daily Times and invited them to come along, since they are both older and don't drive well at night, especially not in the city. Tops in Blue is Air Force Entertainment at its best. All members are active in the Air Force and have entertained service members and their families and audiences around the globe. Not only was it great entertainment, but it didn't cost a dime to get in. You can't beat that! We all enjoyed the program that was very well done, albeit an hour late, because their bus broke down. On the way home, we stopped at our favorite junk food place (Taco Bell) for a 7-layer burrito and a drink to discuss the show. We decided it was an evening well spent.

Tops in Blue Mission Statement

Tops in Blue serves as an expeditionary entertainment unit to provide quality entertainment from within the Air Force resources for the Air Force family, with priority to Air Force personnel stationed worldwide at remote and deployed locations, while simultaneously promoting community relations, supporting recruiting efforts and serving as ambassadors for the United States of America and the U.S. Air Force.

Oh my dear lady. The American persimmon is a very tricky fruit. RIPE, it is unmatched, and I miss them terribly. And as you found out, even the SLIGHTEST bit underripe is a very unpleasant experience! Makes your mouth very odd, dry, and puckery. Eeek! But so happy you got to try some! They are not ripe unless very soft, almost like a custard.

Glad you saw the Airforce entertainers. I don't drive at night either, blind as a bat, I'm afraid.

Hope the crochet lessons go well, My son is a lefty and they have a hard time of it.

Oh how wonderful to teach others the gifts that you have picked up along the way.

I don't think the left handed lady will be too discouraged many people find that they can adjust after being shown how to do something to fit their needs, since shes left handed she will figure out everything is just the opposite and be crocheting in no time :)

Blessings,
Heidi

We have a few wild persimmon trees in our woods. I don't like them. But my husband gathers them and eats some. I say I don't like them, but really I have never tasted them. And thanks again for the LaceCraft book I won in your giveaway. I am enjoying it...

I have never had a persimmon!
Maybe if your left handed pupil sits across from you, and mimics your crochet movements as though she were in front of a mirror, that would help.
It does with guitar anyway :)

Good luck with the students and I'm sure they'll be thrilled to have learned a new skill from you!
