What did I do?

Well, you all know what Gizzy did when it rained, but don't feel too sorry for him, we managed to get a few short walks in between rain showers! My plants have been suffering the most because some of the smaller ones are turning yellow from either lack of sun or too much water. I've been bringing the bigger lettuce inside because I didn't want them ruined by the rain and it looks as if I will be enjoying a salad pretty soon:

There are 7" leaves on my bigger plants. I'm just waiting for them to get fuller before I cut them.

I've been keeping all the lights on for the plants to get as much light as possible during this week due to the lack of sunshine.

Some folks have houseplants on their window sills and I keep lettuce - and I think "them is perty" LOL

So how do I do this harvesting? I've never done this before. Do you cut some leaves off from each plant or do I rip out the entire plant and stick another one in it's place? I almost hate to butcher them, but I have tasted a leaf or two and they are so tender and delicious - I want a Salad soon!

Here I have "Salad Greens" and they are a different variety - will probably need to thin them out and definitely need more light!

I also crocheted a soap bottle dishcloth dress for my neighbor's daughter:

The pattern suggest to wash your dishes with it and afterwards, instead of draping it over your faucet (or wherever) to dry, you simply slip it over your soap bottle. It has elastic in the top and waist, so it slips easily over the top. It irritates me that I can't find the pattern for you right now, because I too would like to make a few more of these. I had crocheted the white dress a while ago and added the red trim only yesterday to match my neighbor's daughter's kitchen. If anyone wants to find  the pattern, try looking at the Crochet Pattern Central site, because that's where I found it. I'm just not sure if it was under dish cloths or soap bottle dress. They have so many nice free patterns there. I use that site all the time for patterns and highly recommend it. There's also a Knitting Pattern Central for knitting patterns.

In any case, my neighbor was very happy to have it to give to her daughter the next time she visits:

I also got a request for crocheting a couple of Swiffer Socks from a Facebook friend. She does not crochet and asked me to make her two in her favorite colors (pink, blue, purple.) I finished them this morning, look:

They are reversible, so you can use the ruffled side as a duster and the smooth side as a mop:

I also made another in lavender/lilac (I don't have purple right now) and sky blue:

Here is the top side:

Here's the link for this pattern in case you want to make your own. I will also list some in my Etsy shop in case someone else wants to buy them.

I'd best go and walk Gizzy since it's not raining right now and he's been sleeping so much that he needs more fuel for his dreams!

I would never use something so pretty and ruffly to MOP THE FLOOR!!! And get it all dirty? No way! Be sure and take a picture of the first big salad you make, do you make your own dressing? I would love one of those bluebirds with the umbrella, and be glad to pay you plus I would add on the shipping cost.

Yes, yes, yes! List them in your Etsy shop, please! I recently saw some of the crocheted swiffer covers on Etsy and shared them with my friends who are always interested in eco-friendly products. I would love to see them in your store and promote them on my blog in a post about eco-friendly things since i Like to post when I find something new.

We have a mop with a reusable cover, but I'm not sure it's the same size. I'll take a look. I love that you made it have two different sides for different purposes- the one I have, and the ones I saw online, were only one texture.

And your lettuce looks great, too! I love the idea of it in hanging baskets. I should do that in our yard since the only place we could put it right now would have potential for being a toilet for Bandit... ewww...

Oh your salad greens and lettuce look so good. I could just reach in and pick them:) Enjoy.

If it is any consolation, we are now on day 8 with some sort of precipitation.

Lots of clever crochet ideas there - if only I had more time:(

Well, haven't YOU been busy? My mom grows leaf lettuce all the time and she just cuts it off and it grows right back. You should have lettuce for a long time.

Sorry, I don't have any advice on the lettuce. It sure does look pretty though! You're going to be up to your ears in salads.

That soap bottle doll dress is adorable! I've never seen anything like that before.

I don't think I'd probably ever use those mop cover things, they're much to pretty for such a dirty job! lol

Your lettuce looks wonderful! So healthy! Your green thumb is showing. That will be a great salad. The mop pads are fantastic and the soap bottle dress is adorable.

Wow the lettuce looks great. I have never tried to grow veggies in a container. Used to have a big garden. Second son has the big garden now. Also, some pretty mops there. I use that same crochet pattern site a lot. Right now I am making totes out of plarn for the Nazareth sisters summer picnic.

that dish soap dress is adorable I love it. I have one of those swiffers and have thought about making my own covers for it. I'll have to check it out. thanks for the link
The lettuce is really coming along. I don't know the first thing about harvesting it though. I know my dad always grew leaf lettuce in his garden but I never liked it so I didn't pay much attention to what he did with it

Wow, Doris, I love the swiffer covers - ingenious!! And your lettuce plants are great! We always have lettuce growing (when it's not too hot outside) and I just cut a few leaves from each plant and let the plants grow. It seems to work well that way and the plants keep growing! Happy eating!! Love, Silke

Your lettuces look lovely!
I often cut one or two leaves at a time. Once they start to go to seed, pick the whole plant.
Heads up, too. Once the summer heat kicks in, the lettuces may go to seed very quickly or they may taste bitter. However, you could try growing something like bush cucumbers then...
Enjoy!

I love the little dishcloth dress and thanks for letting us know where to find it. It is perfect. The lettuce is really looking good.

That fresh lettuce looks yummy! I used to grow the frilly, red-edged lettuce! A couple of leaves on a sandwich and then later some bowls of salad - yum!

A swifter sock???? What a good idea. So much better than buying and tossing and buying and tossing. Way cool, Doris.

I've never grown lettuce so I'm clueless about harvesting but I think pulling out and replacing wouldn't be a good idea. Perhaps just a snip and a nip here and there so the plant will keep growing for a while???

Hi. I just came across your blog when I was searching for mother's day gifts to crochet and I love that dish soap dress. I went to the site suggested and I just can't find it anywhere. I'm wondering if the author took it down. It's the only one I really like! I was wondering if you had found the site again? Thank you so much.
